By Lynn Jones | Each year, musical award shows spotlight the nation’s top artists with nominations and trophies. But this year, one performance rose above the noise—the 2025 BET Awards clip of Ledisi performing her self-penned song, “BLKWMN,” was nothing short of phenomenal.
With commanding style and unmatched stage presence, Ledisi delivered a powerful ode to women—especially Black women—who are courageous, strong, and undeniably beautiful. Written after a 3 a.m. spiritual awakening, the heartfelt anthem captures the complexities of love, loss, and perseverance. “I wrote that song for us,” Ledisi shared. “I’m proud of Black women and what we’ve done in our homes, jobs, careers, and families.”
Speaking from the heart, Ledisi delved into the emotional weight many Black women carry. “We hide so much,” she said, pausing in reflection. “This was my way to say, ‘Thank you.’” Her performance was not just music—it was ministry.
Originally from New Orleans with roots in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ledisi’s vibrant personality shines whether on stage or in conversation. Her musical evolution—from label artist to independent powerhouse—has only deepened her artistic range. Her 2021 tribute album Ledisi Sings Nina honored the legacy of jazz legend Nina Simone and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, along with a nod from the NAACP Image Awards.
As for “BLKWMN,” the song has already made waves beyond the BET stage. After sharing the track with longtime friend and filmmaker Tyler Perry, he featured it in his latest Netflix movie Straw—and the ripple effect was immediate. From Michelle Obama to Angela Bassett, social media lit up with praise for the song and Ledisi’s unforgettable performance.
“I love Jacksonville,” she added with a smile. “Even though it takes a little time to build an audience anywhere, I always feel the love. Fans here show up for me—and I’m so grateful. Come on out and enjoy a feel-good night. Thank you, and see you soon!”
