Home economics may have long disappeared out of public schools, but a local elementary is looking to tackle diversity, food insecurity and preparation all in one swoop. This summer South Woods Elementary is hosted a weekly cooking class where K-4 students learn about international cuisines hands-on.

Each week, students learn about a new country and then create a dish the country is well known for.  As a part of a five-week culinary series, the classes equip students with nutrition education and empower them to make healthy choices. South Woods Elementary is a Community Partnership School, designed to alleviate burdens for low-income families and provide comprehensive support services to kids.

This is a place for kids to explore food in a new and fun way,” said Kaneika Nimmons, M.Ed., South Woods Elementary Community Partnership School Director. “And more importantly, they’re gaining life-long healthy eating habits at the same time. ”
