Revelers Buy Black for Juneteenth Holiday

Gwen Tarver-Lee and Brenda Plant support vendors of color.
A. Phillip Randolph Blvd was packed with Jax Melanin Market Juneteenth revelers excited to celebrate the spirit of freedom. The vendor filled marketplace welcomed hundreds of friends, family and community neighbors excited to participate in the annual event. Juneteenth holiday is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the day news arrived in Galveston, Texas that the emancipation proclamation had passed two years prior and the civil war ended  in 1865. The outdoor street market engages, elevates and supports Duval’s creative artists and black-owned businesses. Five blocks along the historic A. Philip Randolph Boulevard corridor, known as ‘Out East,’ are transformed into a showcase for vendors to sell their products, hear live performances, spoken word, networking and dancing. The market also contributes grants to emerging entrepreneurs to get their business started.
