Physicals to Food and Haircuts Highlight Grand Lodge’s One Stop Student Event

Back to school giveaways were held all over the city this weekend for school age children to receive school supplies. In downtown Jacksonville, the Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge (MWUGL) held their 8th annual back to school giveaway at their headquarters on Broad Street.  Thousands of children stood in line with their parents for haircuts, clothing, snow cones, vision screenings, heath education pamphlets and bounce house fun.

“Giving back to the community is what we do. Distributing these back to school items and providing a safe environment for kids is our duty. We want kids to go back to school in style with no worries,” said MWUGL Deputy Donovan Trimble.

Throughout the weekend, 1,400 backpacks were given away in addition to notebooks, pens and paper. Taking over six months to plan, the event is self funded by members of the Lodge. Their next activity is a Prostate Walk in September to raise awareness on the plightof Black men.
