By Lynn Jones – The National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) Jacksonville Chapter and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Beta Alpha Zeta chapter partnered to present school supplies to various schools in Duval County.
With Covid-19 impacting student’s families with job loss and decreased hours, NNOA and BAZ stepped up to ensure students have the supplies needed to return to class. The distribution was held at Northwestern Middle School located on 45th Avenue. Over 1,000 backpacks and 600 gift back were distributed to students at Northwestern and Pine Estates elementary schools.
“We have the supplies, but our attendance is down.  Many parents are not sending their children to school. This donation will assist the students here now and make sure that the other students on the roster will have supplies,” said Northwestern Principal Lawanda Polydore.
This is the 12th year that the NNOA has organized a back to school giveaway.
“Each year we assist schools with supplies, a little motivation and military mentorship. We’re proud to stay on the front line for all students in Duval county. Plus I’m a Zeta sorority sister, so I had to pull them in too,” said NNOA Member Herlena O. Washington.
NNOA is an organization composed of active duty, reserve and retired officers, midshipmen and cadets, and interested civilians. The organization is comprised of members of all ranks and ethnic groups.  Members say that the goal is to attract and retain officers that represent the best our nation has to offer.
