The 46th annual Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics of the mind also known as ACT-SO, held its annual competition at the 114th NAACP National Convention held in Boston on July 26th-August 1st.
This year, the Jacksonville Branch chaperoned local gold winners: Giavonna Suber (Poetry Written), Deanna McKinzie (Contemporary Dance), Kobe Dawes (Painting), Micha Webster-Bass (Poetry Performance & Dramatics), and Jaiden Robinson (Ballet Dance) to compete against some of the most talented students across the nation.
The local contingency contingency continued the winning streak with Douglass Anderson School of The Arts (DASOTA) senior, Micha Webster-Bass bringing home the gold medal in Poetry Performance. She will receive a $2,000 scholarship along with other prizes.
In addition to the competition, ACT-SO students were able to experience some of the Boston culture that included a star filled kick-off party with dance performances, inspirational messages, college fairs, a trip to the Negro Baseball Museum and Harvard University.
The ACT-SO Program is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate and encourage high academic and cultural achievement. ACT-SO was founded in 1978 to honor and award academic achievement. Competition winners receive medals and scholarships.
The youth were not the only big winners from Jacksonville. Former legislature Tony Hill received the “Keeper of the Flame’ Award during the annual labor Breakfast for his continued efforts in civil rights.
