By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent – The workshop, titled “Zero Emissions: The Future of E-Mobility in Black and Brown Communities,” was a held at Friday, Sept. 18, as part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.
Auto manufacturers and transportation service providers are moving towards an electric and autonomous future shaped by connectivity and shared mobility solutions as consumer driving and ownership preferences evolve, and urbanization trends hasten.
At the same time, COVID-19 has placed a spotlight on the disparate health and socio-economic impacts experienced within vulnerable communities of color who stand to benefit significantly from cleaner, greener, more efficient modes of transportation.
Thus, according to officials at General Motors, communities of color must be well-positioned to sit at the forefront of this dynamic transition.
The famous automaker plans to host a workshop to dissect E-mobility’s future in Black and Brown communities.
The workshop, titled “Zero Emissions: The Future of E-Mobility in Black and Brown Communities,” is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, as part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the conference is all-virtual this year, and everyone can view the workshop online.
U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence plans to provide opening remarks for the session, which will have as its moderator, National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) President and CEO, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr.
Panelists will include Global Cadillac’s Director of Interior Design Crystal Windham, Uber’s Director of Policy, Cities, and Transportation Shin-pei Tsay, EVHybridNoire Founder and Principal Terry Travis, National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) President Damon Lester, and General Motors’ Assistant Program Engineering Manager Charles Muse.
“The NNPA is pleased to continue our longstanding partnership with General Motors as we envision the present and future transformations in electronic-mobility in the automobile industry,” Dr. Chavis stated.
“We also appreciate the leadership of Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence and the members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) for placing this issue on the national agenda for Black America. GM’s innovations are opening the doors to a new generation of Black American engineers, designers, and digital scientists,” he said.
GM officials noted that the workshop “builds off of prior discussions with the CBCF to spotlight the rapid innovation and evolution occurring in the global automotive space with an eye towards leveraging domestic leadership to empower and educate communities of color about the associated entrepreneurial opportunities, cost savings, and environmental health benefits.”
Attendees will hear directly from professionals of color who influence this exciting transformation across the automotive ecosystem.
