After 32 years in the educational system, in 2018, Benetta Ross-Barnes retired from Duval County Public Schools (DCPS).  Ross-Barnes, a 1977 Ribault High School graduate, specialized in early childhood and elementary education. Along with working for DCPS, she tutored students after school and was a huge advocate for the development and growth in all of her students as they matriculated on to higher levels.  She loved music and as her friends and neighbors would tell you, she was the true life of the party! She lost her year long battle with ovarian cancer after a 21 year remission earlier this year and never lost her smile. She loved to gather with family and friends and believed that music and food could ease any situation.

“Everyone loved our mother, she was a true jewel to her family and community. She will be deeply missed,” said daughter Taneishia Ross. In memory of her 64th birthday, Ross-Barnes family held a balloon release showcasing her favorite colors accented with the color teal incorporated to represent ovarian cancer survivors.
