Established in 2012, the AnnieRuth Foundation is named after Ruth Kearney, the grandmother of Founder, Dee Wilcox. The foundation recently unveiled their brick and mortar location on Interstate Center Dr adjacent to its church partner Abyssinian Missionary Baptist Church. The grand opening ribbon cutting celebration included guests from the City of Jacksonville mayor’s office, sponsors, supporters and program student interns proudly witnessing the doors open for business The Foundation’s purpose is to serve as a catalyst of positive change in underserved communities with focuses on education, health initiatives, and economic development. During the ceremony Mayor Donna Deegan presented Ms. Wilcox with the proclamation of opening highlighted by the attendance of Vystar Credit Union employees who had volunteered countless hours of painting, laying out furniture, and landscaping to organize the building for opening day.
“The doors are finally opened. We’ve been patiently waiting on this building to serve our community,” said Wilcox smiling.
As Executive Director, Wilcox has brought over 30 years of professional experience to the role which includes training and development, project management, coaching and counseling, human resources, and leadership development. In 2020, after spending 32 years in corporate America, Dee retired so that she could manage the Annie Ruth Foundation on a full-time basis. As Founder and CEO, she spends innumerable hours organizing the foundation’s banner summer internship program; a one year, points-based program that provides a platform for high school students to develop personal, academic, and workforce development skills. Viewed as a ‘life changing’ experience, the program places students in a safe, professional environment that directly aligns with their career aspiration. During which time they receive hands-on experience, a mentor, and a paycheck. After completing the program, students are better positioned to make a more informed decision as to whether they will continue to pursue their aspiration or explore their ‘Plan B.’
