The Ritz Theater and Museum recently celebrated a 25 year anniversary milestone in their journey to preserve the history and culture of LaVilla, honoring the profound resilience of the Black community in the face of erasure. The Ritz, ‘Through Our Eyes: Proof,’ exhibit is a living testament to this resilience, which was born out of the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving its history.

This year, the anniversary opened the conversation to envision and ask yourself: What would you leave behind if your community faced erasure today? To gather intel on Duval’s community input and erasure opinions, local artist shared their vision through a tapestry of diverse themes inspired by the concept of ‘Proof ‘to these artists. Whether the artist is a Duval native, newcomer or just stopping through Duval, every road connects to Lavilla’s invaluable Black history legacy.  Providing ‘proof’ of the artist ties to Jacksonville, the exhibit features works from religion and community to conception, family, history, shared memory and each artist’s unique interpretation of these themes provides a fascinating journey into their deep connection to their community, inviting the community to explore and discover. The exhibit is open now through October 21st.
