USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) 6th Annual Cancer in the Community, December 14th

The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) and the Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) will be hosting their 6th Annual Cancer in the Community Virtual Conference on Saturday, December 14th, 2024. This is an annual event that features presentations from clinicians, cancer researchers, and behavioral scientists, tailored for cancer patients and survivors, caregivers, community members, and providers. This year’s conference theme is “Improving Patient Outcomes Through Clinical Studies.” As the new year approaches, it is a good reminder of how we, as a society, need to keep striving for improvement in all aspects of life, including cancer care, treatments, and outcomes. Community level education on clinical studies and their benefits is one way we can take the proper steps to achieve improving patient outcomes.

The conference will be taking place virtually via Zoom as we received structural feedback from our communities and patients as their preference for this year conference. This allows for people to join the conference from the comfort of their homes and offices and from all regions of the country. Given that this conference is also in partnership with the Florida-California Cancer Research Education and Engagement (CaRE2) Health Equity Center, it will be convenient for individuals in Florida to join the discussion without worry of travel.

In addition, the conference invites underrepresented communities such as African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos/as, and Asian Pacific Islanders, so simultaneous interpretation will be available in Spanish and Mandarin.  Materials will also be translated in respective languages to allow for the opportunity of proper education and engagement.

Join us via Zoom as we learn about the benefits of clinical studies, what clinical studies are available, and how you can enroll. Led by Dr. Caryn Lerman, Director of the Cancer Center, and Drs. Baezconde-Garbanati and Josh Neman-Ibrahim, Associate Directors of COE and CRTEC respectively. We will also have breakout sessions where you can choose to learn more about colorectal cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, or lung cancer; and we will feature a community panel of patients have participated in a clinical study, survivors, and caregivers. Since it’s also the holiday season and the time of giving, there will be raffles prizes for participants.
