Students Take Charge of Thier Own Mental Health

Shown are the students clamoring to get in to hear resources available to to them to think smarter not harder.

The ‘Helping Hands, Healthy Minds – Youth Mental Health Summit,’ engaged students to increase their mental health awareness; equip students with healthy coping skills and connect students to mental health resources. The student leadership group, the Mental Health Olympians of Ed White High School was instrumental in coordinating the group of student’s attendance and convened a panel of professionals discussing topics such as stress management, family communication, future career planning, and peer relationships.

The afternoon break-out sessions focused on the five pillars of mental health: connections, peace, happiness, balance, and stress management. In addition, students enjoyed a catered lunch and the beats and chants of the Edward High School band and cheerleaders!  “We want the students to know that you are not alone, there is strength in asking for help, the importance of self-regulation, the power of breath, the benefits of movement and the need for healthy connections,” said participant Sally Green.

Too many students are experiencing symptoms of depression. The percentage of high school students feeling sad and hopeless increased significantly over a ten-year period. In the United States, suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth and young adults, 10 – 24 years of age accounting for 7,126 deaths.  If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available.
