Since 1997 Sollie Mitchell has been a retired man of leisure. Always an activist, he spends time working toward helping to build a better community. In honor of that continued commitment, elected officials, community leaders and friends turned out for an impromptu lunch to honor his 99th birthday. The lunch was held last Friday at Clara’s at the Cathedral with a birthday cake sponsored by the Clara White Mission Culinary Arts program. On Saturday, Sollie took the time to co-throw out the first pitch at the Jumbo Shrimp baseball game with Vince Coleman, all American base stealer for the St. Louis Cardinals and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and 1978 graduate of Raines High School.
