Kwanzaa Celebrates 40 Years on the First Coast

Shown is Ngomathunder African American Drum Troop teacher Ryan Sinclair with youth attendees.

Kwanzaa began its creative tenure in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga, an activist and author with the intent to educate the black culture on African America life principles to be applied to your personal, community, business and family life.  In Jacksonville, Kwanzaa has been celebrating since the 80s and has found a home at the Ritz Theatre and Museum. The community was invited to come out to learn about the seven principles and the excitement surrounding Kwanzaa’s legacy. The first principle and community day is ‘Umoja’ and was celebrated with small business owners and vendors in the Ritz lobby. Other locations included New Life Community Church and Kingdom Builder’s group with live music and performers. Hosted by Anita Spencer, the evenings events also included food, music, cultural activities and dialogue and the “Candle Lighting,” ceremony was directed by local artist Ryan Sinclair.
