Jacksonville Non-Profit Charity Foundation for Fortitude Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement in Effort to Meet 2017 Fundraising Goals

JACKSONVILLE, FL – November 13, 2017 – Foundation for Fortitude has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. The Jacksonville based 501(c)3 non-profit charity provides scholarships, educational programs, scholastic and personal support, mentoring, and other opportunities to young minority college women in the First Coast area. The charity’s fundraising goals for 2017 fund the scholarships and services for the young women that entered the program this fall as college freshmen or sophomores.

Foundation for Fortitude’s scholarship fund is hoping to not only reach their annual fundraising goal through the #GivingTuesday event, but surpass it in the hope to fund other critical needs of the Foundation such as providing meal plans, and more for the women in their program. Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and follows the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The event shifts the mindset from holiday shopping to holiday giving and inspires people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
Participation in the #GivingTuesday global movement is an opportunity for Foundation for Fortitude to connect with new supporters that may not be aware of the ability to support a charity local to Jacksonville empowering the future lives of young minority college women. While many current supporters are from the local area, the #GivingTuesday event is global and the charity expects to connect with supporters outside of Northeast Florida. 92Y − a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back − conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving.

In 2016, the fifth year of #GivingTuesday, millions of people in 98 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $177 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness. “We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, Founder of #GivingTuesday and Executive Director of 92Y. “As we embark on our sixth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”
Sherry Blue, Founder and Executive Director of Foundation for Fortitude, echoed Mr. Timms and remarked, “We are grateful to the concept of #GivingTuesday for it has allowed us to connect with generous supporters and volunteers that would not have found us otherwise. Through this very important day we are hopeful that we will be able to fill our current financial needs and go beyond to check the things that are lurking on our wish list that have had to take a back seat to the essential needs. To say we are excited that #GivingTuesday is around the corner is an understatement, we are thrilled and hopeful for the possibilities it offers.”

With Foundation for Fortitude they are empowered through job shadowing with leaders in their chosen career field, are exposed to business etiquette, professional networking and leadership roles organizing community outreach events, and more. Less likely to drop out of college, with hands on exposure to what their future can be, not only are their goals clearer, but they have true mentors and support to guide them toward their college degree. This not only ensures a better future for them, but it has a positive impact on their families, their community, and those they serve through their chosen career.
