– U.S. Rep Al Lawson (FL-05) is proud to announce that George “Gary” Hartsfield Jr., a senior at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, received an offer of appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Hartsfield was one of Rep. Lawson’s nominees for the Colorado-based service academy.
“Gary’s academic excellence and dedication to his community have prepared him well for the U.S. Air Force Academy,” Rep. Lawson said. “I wish him the best and have no doubt he will serve our state and nation proudly.”
Hartsfield strongly believes in the Air Force’s core values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. After attending the Academy, he hopes to further his studies and become doctor.
“Attending the Academy will allow me the honor of representing and defending the country I love,” Hartsfield said. “I constantly push myself to be the greatest at any task that is set before me. This will be no different. I would like to thank Representative Lawson for his nomination.”
Hartsfield, who holds a 4.38 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Society and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. In his spare time, he serves as a tutor and camp counselor for children in his community.
Members of Congress may nominate students to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Hartsfield is Lawson’s third and final nominee to receive an appointment. His other nominees were Chandler Stiles (Stanton College Preparatory School): United States Naval Academy and Charles Woo (Stanton College Preparatory School): Military Academy at West Point.
Students selected to attend a service academy must commit to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
