Under the consultation of Colin Kaepernick, Nike has decided to pull an Independence Day-themed shoe. The new design was set to feature an early American flag that was created by Betsy Ross.

Kaepernick pointed out that this flag once hung during a time when slavery was still alive and well and explained that the symbol was “offensive” to many Americans.

Of course, as with anything the former NFL player does in relation to protesting the likes of American traditions, controversy has followed.

While many agree and support the athletic brand’s decision, it is not sitting well with others. In fact, Arizona Governor announced he will be pulling financial incentives previously promised to the brand for its opening of a new Plant. There is also a call to boycott Nike products.

Just a few days away from the Fourth of July, this controversy is sparking bigger debates and discussions in regards to the paradox of America’s history.
