The Bob Hayes Invitational Track Meet Organization (BHITM) paying homage to the legacy of its namesake, recently hosted a pre-Olympic reception at the Legends Center.
The evening of celebration honored local legend Bob “Bullet” Hayes, historical recipient of three gold medals as well as a Super Bowl ring. In addition, the committee celebrated and honored former local Olympians and other accomplished sports figures for their tenacity and sportsmanship. Keynote speaker was 1972 Raines Graduate Rey Robinson who was slated to win a gold medal in the 1972 Olympic 100 meter race and known as the world’s fastest human. Robinson shared his firsthand personal Olympic experience, “They changed our schedules and we ended up late for the race,” said Robinson. After years of training, he and his teammates were not allowed to run in the Olympics.
Guests enjoyed a food bar and special reflections from Bob Hayes daughter Westine Lodge, proudly speaking on her father’s 60th Tokyo Olympic Anniversary success.
Greg Coleman, a BHITM alumni and Executive Director and event organizer was proud to honor his fellow classmates and teammates, “The NFL was my profession that opened doors to many possibility that exposed me to other cultures, cities and new relationship. We tell all our BHITM alumni that they are champions for life,” said Coleman.
