Back to School Event Uplifts the Urban Core

By Lynn Jones-Turpin – An early morning exercise workout was on the agenda for the Florida Blue, Protalks, Mayo, partners and supporters back to school health awareness day held recently on the grounds of the American Legion Post 197. The Edgewood/Avenue B neighborhood residents were in line early visiting healthcare vendor booths, registering for book bag pick-ups and signing the roster for youth haircuts. More than 400 attendees pounced around enjoying the hockey booth, refreshments, dancing and networking.

This back to school and wellness event provided physicals for kids, vision services, information on prostate cancer, veteran services and Mayo Clinic healthcare experts. Academic excellence and community support was the acumen provided to youth as they prepare for the new school year. “If you can’t bring the people to the healthcare, we bringing healthcare, education, fresh food and more,” said volunteer Selena Pope. Organizers of the event are a consortium of healthcare/fitness experts, hospitals, researchers and nutritionists passionate to empower, educate and uplift ostensible urban core neighborhoods.
