Alpha Phi Alpha Honor Veterans on Annual Holiday

The Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. hosted its 7th annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon at the Adam Herbert Center on the University of North Florida campus. This year’s theme was ‘A Century of Service.’ The event aimed to honor the 100 years of sacrifice and dedication of local Alpha Phi Alpha military veterans while providing support to those veterans housed at the Clara White Mission. Several veteran organizations and local dignitaries were in attendance. Retired Sergeant Major Pat McCullough, Veteran Affairs Chief of State in the Mayor’s office provided the opening remarks, while the Honorable Kevin Carrico, City Council Vice President and chapter member remarked on the annual celebrated occasion. The luncheon was highlighted with speakers, retired U.S. Navy Captain Ester Winters, and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Brother Parrie Ahammer. Both speakers highlighted the need for continued service to the country and the community.

During the year the chapter feeds and provides toiletries to the homeless veterans at the Clara White Mission and highlights various mental/healthcare, mentorship related programs throughout Duval.

The Upsilon Lambda Chapter was installed at Jacksonville on December 30, 1925 making it Florida’s first Alpha Chapter.  The chapter has received private and public acclaim for participating in Pan-Hellenic affairs, juvenile delinquency programs focusing on drug and crime prevention, scholarship awareness, civil rights, and voter registration.
