To celebrate National Scholarship Month this November, Sallie Mae recently announced the latest recipients of its Bridging the Dream Scholarship. Jacksonville-local Riverside Highs School student Amaya Morene has been selected as one of 40 students nationwide to receive a $10,000 scholarship from Sallie Mae, in partnership with Thurgood Marshall College Fund. To qualify, applicants must submit a video describing a significant experience in their life either where they achieved a goal or faced a setback, or how it shaped who they are as a person. Amaya was driven by book bans in Florida to establish “freedom libraries” aimed at increasing tolerance and acceptance by ensuring children gain exposure to different worldviews. In addition, Amaya stood out for her exceptional academic performance and strong moral character.
Currently, Amaya is a freshman at Howard University, studying Anthropology and hoping obtain a doctorate post graduation. The Bridging the Dream Scholarship is aimed towards students in historically underrepresented and underserved communities to promote diversity in education.
