Over one hundred children and their parents got in the college spirit with the I’m A Star Foundation’s Family Empowerment Forum and College Fair. The event was held inside the gym at Ribault High School for a select group of 7th graders in the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) federal grant program. Edward Waters College’s Marching Band kicked off the festivities where the youth had the opportunity to preview eleven colleges and universities.
I’m A Star will follow this group of 7th graders and will mentor the cohort once every two weeks in addition to providing provide parenting empowerment forums twice a month through their first year of college. GEAR UP is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. The program will last seven year, in an effort to ensure students academic success and college readiness.
