Raines High School “Ichiban” #1 The Mighty Vikings” Are Going To The State Championship

By L. Brooks | I can only imagine this is a full-circle moment for Donovan Masline, the Head Coach of William M. Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

Coach Masline is not only the Head Coach, he graduated from Raines High School in the Class of 2008 and is a proud alumni of the school’s rich tradition and legacy.

During his tenure at Raines, he was a star defensive linebacker named to the All-Gateway Conference and All-Northeast Florida teams, honored as a student-athlete of the month by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame’s “Play it Smart” program, and was recruited to play for the Alabama State Hornets college football team.

After graduating from Alabama State University in 2012, Masline returned to Jacksonville, FL to teach for Duval County Public Schools.

His success, groundedness, and desire to pay it forward are more than likely attributed to his parents, his supportive friends and family, his church family at Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, and his spiritual beliefs.

Coach Masline was quoted in The Florida Times-Union paper on May 22, 2020, “It’s not a lot of people that get to play at Raines High School, go play in college, then come home to coach at Raines, let alone as head coach. I’m very thankful, very humble for the opportunity.”

Clayton Freeman concluded the Florida Times-Union article by saying, “Masline is looking forward to the chance to bring Raines football back onto the field in pursuit of another trophy to join their championships in 1997, 2017 and 2018.”

Fast forward four years to 2024, the Vikings are headed to the state championship. This is a testament to “When it is your time, it is your time. Whatever is meant for you, shall be for you.”

For him and many others who’ve followed his life and career from childhood, this is a monumental full-circle moment. From 16 years ago when he retired his jersey as a defensive linebacker on the graveyard at William M. Raines High School to now being the Head Coach going to the state championship.

This is truly a story to be inspired by.
