Nickel Boys Movie Review

By Lynn Jones | Nickel Boys movie, directed by Ramell Ross, has earned significant acclaim for its poignant portrayal of the horrific abuse endured by boys at a Florida reform school, inspired by the real-life Dozier School for Boys. Set in the era of strict Jim Crow segregation, the film follows the story of Elwood Curtis, a young Black boy who dreams of escaping his harsh circumstances through education. Elwood’s journey takes a tragic turn when he is wrongfully sent to the reform school after being arrested while hitchhiking with a convict. At the school, the harsh realities of institutionalized racism and abuse unfold, as Black boys face neglect and violence, while the white boys receive better treatment.

Throughout the film, Elwood’s optimism for a better life is shattered as he witnesses the brutality of the institution and the loss of his aspirations. Despite efforts to escape with his friend Turner, Elwood is tragically killed. Turner later escapes, starts a new life, and finds some comfort in seeing the school’s dark legacy come to light, with justice finally being served for the victims.

The film, which highlights the painful and complex issues of systemic racism and abuse, has won numerous awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. The Nickel Boys is a powerful, emotional experience, shedding light on a tragic chapter in American history.
