Legacy of Bob Hayes Lives on Through Track Meet and Banquet

The legend of Olympian and NFL star Bob Hayes was commemorated last weekend with the 54th Annual Bob Hayes  Invitational Track Meet (BHITM) and the 14th Awards Banquet also bearing his name.

This year’s keynote speaker was BHITM founder and organizer Coach Nathaniel Washington.  Known by many students and faculty, Nathanial Washington was employed in the DCPS system for 51 years, coaching for 21 years followed by 30 years in administration at various schools.

On Friday and Saturday, Raines High School (Hayes alma mater) was the scene for the annual track meet where over 200 middle and high school athletes” competed for the championship trophy prize.

Establish in 1964, the event provides scholarships for young athletes and encourages young people to incorporate sports strategies’ on and off the field.
