The inaugural Jacksonville Urban Film & Music Festival made its debut this weekend, drawing filmmakers, musicians, actors, writers, and community leaders for a three-day celebration of independent storytelling and diverse creative voices.
The festival, presented in partnership with the Orlando Urban Film Festival, was founded by Dr. Shaun Powell and co-founder Marianne Eggleston to uplift independent creatives. The weekend schedule featured a networking meetup and extended screenings at AMC Theatres, showcasing a wide range of feature films, documentaries, short films, music videos, and student projects.
The event concluded with the presentation of the inaugural Hattie Awards. Named in honor of trailblazing actress Hattie McDaniel, the award recognizes the outstanding achievements in filmmaking, music, and local community impact.
This years individual honoree’s included Davenia McFadden, Chad Hendricks, Gregory Blue, Michael McDowell, and Dr. Sherry Lowman, who were recognized for their contributions to the arts, education, and community service. Standout projects in the festival completive categoryrs included:
Best Feature Film: “I Suck at Dating,”
Best Documentary: “A Class of Her Own“
Best Student Film: “A Book of Freedom“
Organizers stated the festivals arrival reflects the city’s expanding footprint and its long term commitment to supporting independent artists.
Submissions for the 2027 festival are scheduled to open in July.
