Heroic Commander and Educator Henry L. Sellers, Sr. Celebrates 80th Jubilee

To celebrate his 75th birthday, his marriage anniversary and his legacy, Henry L. Sellers, Sr. and family shared a weekend of events.  Festivities included a banquet for a few hundred friends inside the Crown Plaza Hotel and an intimate ‘Living La Vida Loca’ happy hour with his wife of 38 years, new Stanton Blue Devil graduate Sharon Speights.
Born on March 25, 1943, under the astrological sign of Aries, Henry L. Sellers, Jr. was born in Baxley, Georgia and is the second eldest of fourteen children.  Sellers and his family moved to Jacksonville in the late 1950’s, where sellers graduated in 1961 from Northwestern Junior- Senior High School.  Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 16, 1961, and quickly became one of the most renowned Command Sergeant Majors of his time. In his rise from Private to Command Sergeant Major he served in a variety of NCO leadership positions and assignments with the Infantry. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with “V” Device for Heroism, Bronze Star Medal for service, two Purple Hearts, four Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device for Heroism, three Army Commendations for service and numerous foreign and service awards.
In August 1985, after more than twenty-four years of military service he retired leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rollins College,  Sellers taught in the Duval County Public School System for 24 years, finalizing his retirement inside the halls of Raines High School as a teacher and JROTC officer.
