Eastside Residents Receive 250 Free Laptops to Help Close the Digital Divide

Gina Torres presents local residents Sapphire Hightower with her new free laptop at the Debs Store event.

AT&T recently opened a new Connected Learning Center inside The Corner at Debs Store in Jacksonville to provide internet access and high-quality educational tools to residents who encounter barriers to online participation.

To celebrate the partnership with AT&T and the grocery store Blue Zones approval status, the store hosted a celebration where 250 individuals received a laptop to help provide access to the world wide web. In Florida, it’s estimated that 11% of households don’t have access to the internet or connected devices needed to fully participate in the online world, an issue known as the “digital divide.” This Connected Learning Center is the first in Jacksonville and the sixth in Florida. It offers free access to digital resources, including high-speed AT&T Fiber internet, Wi-Fi and Dell computers. It also provides educational resources and free literacy courses.
