Deputy Chief Willie King was officially confirmed by the Jacksonville City Council as the Deputy Chief of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD), solidifying his leadership role after serving in an interim capacity for 15 months. This confirmation comes as part of a broader effort led by Mayor Donna Deegan to diversify and strengthen the department’s leadership, ensuring it reflects the city’s demographics and prepares for upcoming retirements through a comprehensive succession plan.

King joins a newly appointed executive team committed to enhancing training, recruitment, and operational value under Chief Keith Powers, who continues to lead the 1,800-person department with a $303 million budget. The council’s unanimous approval marks a significant step in JFRD’s ongoing transformation to better serve Jacksonville’s diverse community. King hails from South Florida; holds a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration, is a devoted husband and father to four children.
