Trans rights are being diminished across the nation. Most recently, it’s been reported that Florida’s health department is denying updated birth certificates for transgender Floridians, even for those whose other government-issued identification reflects their gender identity. It’s important now more than ever to continue amplifying trans stories to help combat misinformation and stereotypes against the trans community.
With this in mind, introducing “Here We Are,” a trans truth telling video campaign that shares the real and incredible stories of transgender people, created in partnership between GLAAD and GROUND Media. The campaign has launched video vignettes across the country to combat misinformation about transgender people, increase trans visibility and encourage allyship.
71 percent of Americans say they’ve never met a transgender person before. “Here We Are” aims to change that statistic through spotlighting three changemakers who each have their own unique story to tell and show the world that trans people are just like their cis-gender peers. Ultimately, the campaign hopes to educate the public on trans lives and help people understand that trans people deserve the human right to live a happy and healthy life.
Nadya, a college student majoring in performing arts and fashion design and one of the change makers for the campaign standing up to say “Here We Are.” Nadya is a Latina and Arabic trans woman and has been faced with a lack of acceptance of her gender identity. Despite the adversities stemming from transphobic societal norms, Nadya’s father Mickey – who comes from a conservative background – embraced her transition and accepted her authentic self, giving her the support she needed to push through and live her life authentically.
