The City of Jacksonville’s Mayor’s Victim Assistance Advisory Council recently hosted events to recognize crime victims as part of the local observance of National Crime Victims’ Week, April 8-14.
This year’s theme was “Expand the Circle Reach all Victims”.
Coinciding with public rallies, candlelight vigils and other similar activities held across the nation, the City events scheduled included a press conference, “Tossing of the Roses” event which honors victims of homicide and their families by tossing a rose in the St. Johns River. Other events include the annual Victims’ Rights Week Luncheon honoring individuals and programs that provide services to crime victims and the week of event finale included Families of Slain Children’s Balloon Release event in memory of crime victims. Crime victims were honored as their names were read aloud during the vigil. The event brings awareness and allows families of victims to honor their loved ones. Shown are Families of Slain Children CEO Beverly McClain and victims advocate supporter A.J. Jordan holding a sign with the names of slain victims.
