As a respected Haskell Company architect of 26 years, Janel LeGard is proud to release her book, “You Can Be, ME TOO! A week in the Life of an Architect.” This inspirational children’s story book and coloring book is geared to bring awareness and inspiration for the next generation of future architects. To motivate the next generation, LeGard was invited to Cultural Designz ‘Winter Wonderland,’ small business market held inside Lenox Studios on the Southside.

LeGard was thrilled to bring her books to sale, sign, drink hot cocoa, share the book with Santa and respond to a Q&A session. As an architect, Janel is driven to be the role model in the African American community, sharing her Architecture profession where she has had the ability to express creativity, gain valuable technical, financial skills and having the qualified skills to design buildings, plan and supervise construction projects.

She expressed, “I didn’t have a role model growing up. Especially in the architect career arena. I’m proud of my profession and want to give back to the youth for an awarding career path.” Her storybook and coloring book are a testament of her journey in this profession.  The book details a week in the life of an Architect and an informative conversation between a mother and a daughter about her career as an architect. The book’s character Anjel has to prepare a paper and give a presentation for her career day classroom project. She receives detailed day by day insight into the profession and learns how exciting and creative the world of design and construction can be.

LeGard is hopeful that she plants a seed that the career of architecture is a viable and and obtainable goal. As a child, Janel loved playing with building blocks, coloring and simply being creative. She found her love for architecture in high school.  Tuskegee University is where she furthered her education and passion of becoming an architect after a recommendation from her high school principal. After graduating Tuskegee, she attended Auburn University to obtain her Master of Building Construction.  She currently volunteers with A.C.E. Mentor Program Northeast Florida affiliate since 2007, a program that inspires high school students to pursue careers in Architecture, Construction and Engineering. Janel received her architectural license in 2009, at that time, she was one of the first 500 licensed African American Women Architects in the United States of America out of a profession of a little over 219,000 registered architects (0.002%).
