By Victor Omondi – (Source: www.yourblackworld.net) – The historic firsts for Black people just keep popping up.
Last week, Milton C. Jones was elected the Chair of the Board of Directors of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Jones is the first African American to hold that position.
The formal announcement made on Tuesday in an official press release might have taken some people by surprise, those who presumed that UNCF has previously had a Black board chairperson.
Jones replaces William F. Stasior Sr., a white man who has served as the chairman of the UNCF board for the past 11 years.
UNCF states on its website: “The men and women who guide the actions of the organization are a diverse group of people, and with their help, the organization ensures as many students as possible make it to and through college successfully.”
Jones, a businessman and civic leader, who earlier on worked as Vice-Chair of the UNCF Board and Chair of its Finance Committee, has been on the board since 2005 and swore to intensify the organization’s legacy.
“Since 1944, UNCF has played an integral role in changing the life trajectory for each student it has served, and l look forward to continuing that legacy,” Jones stated in a short sentiment. “Our member institutions and students remain the focus of our collective efforts. As we progress each year, we will grow our organization by building upon the strong foundation laid at UNCF’s inception and strengthened throughout its history.”
The UNCF continues to be very active and relevant, and recently was the beneficiary of more than $3 million to support Historically Black Colleges(HBCUs) and COVID-19donation efforts as part of the NBA All-Star weekend earlier this month.
