ASALH Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act by Honoring Local Trailblazers

The James Weldon Johnson Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History recently held its’ annual luncheon  celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Civil Rights Movement. The theme of the luncheon was “Civil Rights, Then and Now”! The keynote speaker was Mr. Opio Sokoni, President of the local Southern Christian Leadership Conference organization. This historical event honored the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) organization for its leadership in the civil rights movement which was the organization of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It also presented “Trailblazers Awards” to local civil rights activists; Rodney Hurst, author and Civil Rights leader, Sollie Mitchel, A. Phillip Randolph Pullman Porters activist, Lloyd Pearson, NAACP civil rights activist and former Senator Arnett Girardeau.
