Allenites Shop till they Dropped and Donate $3k+ in Proceeds to the Church

The Mount Zion AME Church is a historic church  located at 201 East Beaver Street was founded July 28, 1866.  The church acquired the property at the northeast corner of Beaver and Newnan Streets, and a small frame structure was built for worship services on that site.
In 1870 a large wooden church was built, and twenty years later an even larger brick sanctuary, with a seating capacity of nearly 1,500, was built at this location.  Fast forward to the present day, and the congregation is under the leadership of Pastor Pearce Ewing.

Assisting Pastor Ewing with fundraising over the growing flock is church member Olivia Young.  This past weekend Young and the “Allenites,” named after Richard Allen, the first bishop of the AME Church held a shopping venture with a purpose.  The Allenites focus on organizing church functions, dispelling racial oppression, upgrading the social status of the black community, organizing Sabbath schools to teach literacy and promoting national organizations to develop political strategies.

The sponsored day trip included stops to the Tanger Outlets in Hilton Head, SC and Pooler, GA.  Over 50 church members and friends boarded the bus at 7 a.m. and enjoyed a continental breakfast, games, jazz music, movies and prizes. The group returned to Jacksonville at 8 p.m. exhausted from a full day of shopping.

The following Sunday, Young presented Pastor Ewing with the 3k proceeds raised from the shopping trip extravaganza. Shown is Pastor Ewing excitedly accepting the donation from the Olivia Young and the Allenites.
