WHO: Florida Blue, the state’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan, has been serving the state for more than 80 years helping people and communities achieve better health
WHAT: While retailers are preparing for the Black Friday rush and online portals prepare for Cyber Monday, insurance professionals at Florida Blue are preparing for Marketplace Monday. Just like the day after Thanksgiving sees a sizeable increase in shopping for holiday gifts, the Monday after Thanksgiving (Marketplace Monday) sees a surge of people sign up for health insurance.
For the past several years, the Monday following Thanksgiving has seen a surge in signups and renewals of health insurance plans available through the Marketplace (Florida Blue reports Marketplace Monday is one of its busiest days of the year.
No one knows why Marketplace Monday is such a busy day for enrolling in health insurance, but some speculate people get in the shopping mindset following Black Friday. Others suggest Thanksgiving being over makes people realize the year is drawing to an end quickly and they need to act fast before the December 15 deadline to have effective coverage starting January 1.
There are a few important changes this year including:
· More steps and information may be required when you enroll so you can keep your subsidy. So being prepared is a top priority this year.
· Starting in 2026, anyone who underestimates their annual income and gets more of a subsidy than they should have must repay 100% of the extra amount.
· You must have filed your taxes and reconciled them using IRS form 8962 for any year that you’ve received a subsidy up to 2024 to get a subsidy for 2026.
· There will be fewer opportunities to enroll in health insurance outside of the fall Open Enrollment Period. Those who don’t enroll during this time may have to wait until the next Open Enrollment before getting coverage.
Because of these changes, many people will need help enrolling or renewing this year, and Florida Blue is providing expert guidance at no additional cost. The enrollment and renewal processes are different and will likely take longer than before, so it’s important to have a plan for Open Enrollment.
