It’s hard to believe that after more than 40 movies and two decades in the film industry, Spike Lee has never been nominated for an Academy Award — that is until now. This morning, Lee’s BlacKkKlansman took home a total of six nods (including Best Director) for the comedy that follows Ron Stallworth, the first African-American police officer in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who works undercover to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan in 1979.

Surprised? Us too. The same sentiment was felt this morning when we realized Regina King was another who, despite being on screen for three decades and a three-time Emmy winner, this marks the very first Oscar nomination for the If Beale Street Could Talk actress. She also took home her first Golden Globe earlier this month.

Mahershala Ali is looking to secure his second Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in three years for his role in Green Book. Remember when we asked if he was the new Idris Elba? In awards land, it looks to be true.

Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther snagged seven nominations, including Best Picture, a first for a superhero film. The Marvel flick was also nominated for Best Costume Design, giving Hampton University Alumna Ruth Carter the third nod of her career (Malcolm X and Amistad).

The 91st Academy Awards will air live, and the first time without a host, February 24.
