By Claire Hansen, Staff Writer Jan. 6, 2021, at 2:58 p.m. – A mob of pro-Trump protesters forced their way inside the building shortly after lawmakers entered into a joint session of Congress to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

THE U.S. CAPITOL WENT on lockdown Tuesday as supporters of President Donald Trump, spurred on by his comments and angered by his loss, breached police lines and stormed the seat of American democracy in a bid to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

The mob of pro-Trump protesters forced their way onto the stairs and inside the building itself shortly after lawmakers inside entered into a joint session of Congress to certify Presdient-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Capitol Police told occupants of the Capitol to shelter in place and locked doors throughout the building, including the doors to the Senate and House chambers.

Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the session, was reportedly rushed out of the Capitol.

Members of Congress inside the House chamber were told by police to don gas masks.

    Lawmakers were reportedly being evacuated.
