By Lynn Jones (Urban Traveler/Entertainment Reporter) | With the Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP) and Bronx culture in her youthful ear, Samara Joy has ignited jazz aficionado’s with her rendition of “Guess Who I Saw Today,’ an old standard classic written in 1952 by Murray Grand. When I heard Samara’s version, it reminded me of my days growing up in Detroit listening to the famed WJZZ radio station! Far from 1952, Samara Joy, 24, maturity and personality shines through with her musical knowledge and history of her craft. Hailing from a musical family that includes deep gospel roots, Samara has resurrected the hearts of American jazz artist, listeners, collectors and supporters. “Guess Who I Saw today,’ was produced on her second album with the intention of expanding her musical repertoire, while introducing the lyrics to a new audience. Samara’s music is rooted in the sounds of jazz, gospel and R&B genres. She exuberantly credits her father and grandparents for gifting her her harmonic voice, industry exposure and the proficiency to maneuver throughout her budding career.
For her third album scheduled for release October 11th, Samara assembled her new band and is excited to present to her audience new arrangements, personally written songs and lyrics, and the continuation of introducing old standards with a diverse band. Samaras advise to upcoming artist, “Don’t focus on the attention, continue to grow as an artist and musician. Don’t get caught up in the trends that lead to nowhere. Craft your art and the rest will follow.” With three Grammys under her musical belt, her fans and I look forward to her next album as she continues to soar to the top of the charts.
