New Roller Rink to Revive a Bygone Era of Skating

Planet Skate Roller Rink, a veteran-owned business, recently opened its doors to the public during the Thanksgiving holiday, bringing long-awaited recreational options to the Northside community. Located at 9441 Lem Turner Road, in the former K-Mart Plaza now next to Roses, the rink is the brainchild of 1980 Ribault High School graduate Terry Harris.

The grand opening celebration included free food, music, skating, and family-friendly activities. Planet Skate, Harris’ second skating venue, will offer ongoing public skate sessions, themed nights, private party rentals, youth programs, and community events. The facility features updated lighting, an enhanced sound system, and redesigned spaces suitable for skaters of all ages and skill levels.

Harris grew up skating at the original Sk8City rink on the Northside, a staple of the community for decades. Inspired by his love for children and the need for positive outlets in the area, he decided after retiring from the Air National Guard to open the skating rinks.

“The community has suffered years with a food desert. I saw it as a family entertainment desert,” Harris said. “There’s nowhere for the kids to go and just have a good, fun time.”

Since its grand opening ,Planet Skate has drawn strong community support, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local politicians.

The facility not only offers roller skating but also plans to host after school programs, STEM activities, and mentoring for local youth.
