A lively Christmas Motown production was recently presented by ‘Don’t Miss a Beat’ (DMAB) after-school program to celebrate the holiday season.
Performed on stage inside their headquarters located on Beaver Street, 200 attendees witnessed an original holiday musical theatre production of “A Soulful Christmas.” Directed by Juquan Vickers the story encompasses composers, playwrights and choreographers for a holiday musical showcase that depicted the sounds of Motown! On stage, the students sang the musical hits of the Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops, Michael Jackson and more. The LaVilla School of the Arts Jazz Band performed the musical score as the audience danced and clapped to the soulful beats.
DMAB blends music, art, academic achievement, and civic engagement to inspire and enlighten children and teens in Jacksonville’s Brooklyn, Riverside and Woodstock communities. Under the direction of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Julliard graduate Ulysses Owens Jr., he remarked “Music empowers and inspires the next generation of change makers; our afterschool performing arts program is a facility to uphold youth development and cultivate youth talent.” said Owens.
