By William Jackson – Rodney L. Hurst, author, historian, educator and civil rights leader spoke to the People Reading for Inspiration, Discussion, and Enjoyment (P.R.I.D.E.) book club at the Main Library Downtown Branch. Those in attendance were treated to history lessons that are rarely put into the history books. As a noted author, Hurst has gained notoriety for his four books related to his personal experiences and those that worked with him in the fight for civil rights. His most recent title is “Black and Brilliant.”  Hurst opened the forum for questions, sharing his experiences and inspiring those in attendance.

Atlantic Coast High School student Janae Brown was excited to hear Mr. Hurst and what he shared, “Black History is being denied in the classrooms of Florida schools and even being banned in books in Florida and other states,” she shared, “it is powerful to be here and experience living history.”  The agenda also included the historical works of other civil rights icons including Dr. Arnett Elyus Girardeau Jr., Rutledge Henry Pearson, James Weldon Johnson, Asa Philip Randolph and more.
