The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp held their annual Red Caps Negro League night for this year’s annual ‘Salute to the Negro League,’ baseball game.  The team paid tribute by wearing the trademark Jax Red Caps uniforms, which were worn in the Negro American League from 1938 until 1942. The Shrimp won the game 7-5 over the Gwinnett Stripers.  Also sharing the field was Sean Gibson, the great-grandson of Negro League legend Josh Gibson on hand for a meet and greet and  Red Caps jersey and pen holder giveaway. Gibson played for the Homestead Grays from 1930 to 1931, moved to the Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1932 to 1936, hit close to 800 career home runs and was known as the “Black Babe Ruth.” During the breaks fan honored the life and career of baseball’s most iconic-trailblazing figure, Jackie Robinson. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made his big league debut and became the first Black major league baseball player of the modern era. Recently, the MLB celebrated the 75th anniversary of his debut in the major leagues. Shown is Jumbo shrimp player Edward Cabrera in his Jax Red Caps uniforms throwing to the winning base.
