Ken Knight Drive resident Alton Gordon received an unexpected surprise Thursday night, December 12, 2019 during the live broadcast of the Jaguars All Access show at the Mellow Mushroom in Avondale. Gordon, who became known for helping evacuate neighbors from their flooded homes during Hurricane Irma in 2017 and continues to look out for the neglected neighborhood on Jacksonville's Northside, was brought to watch the broadcast and have dinner with friends not realizing he had been chosen by the Jaguars and Calais Campbell to be awarded tickets and trip expenses to attend the upcoming Super Bowl in Miami. The normal stoic Gordon was a bit overwhelmed by the announcement and was brought to tears by the news and the attention. The Jacksonville Jaguars nominated defensive lineman Calais Campbell as their nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. As part of getting the nomination Campbell received resources from the NFL Foundation and Nationwide to help organizations and individuals in their community and Gordon was one of those recipients. The Jacksonville Jaguars nominated defensive lineman Calais Campbell for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.  Considered one of the league’s most prestigious honors, the award recognizes the NFL player that best demonstrates outstanding community service and excellence on the field. Campbell will wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the end of the season in recognition of his accomplishments on and off the field.

One of the perks of being “Man of the year” are Super Bowl tickets.  During last weeks Jaguars All Access television program, Calais surprised Washington Heights resident Alton Gordon with the tickets. “When asking around the community whose doing the work, Alton’s name kept coming up,”  said Calais. Alston, known as the “Mayor of Ken Knight Drive,” was speechless. Calais will also provide a stipend to help with his travel.
