The Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted its 8th Annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon at the Maceo Elk’s Lodge #8 downtown location, honoring the brave men and women who have served our nation. This year’s theme, ‘Service Beyond the Uniform: Celebrating Veterans Community Leadership,” recognizes not only military service but also the continued impact veterans make in civilian life as community leaders, mentors, and advocates. Numerous branches of the military were in attendance and honored.

The luncheon was highlighted with two speakers, retired U.S. Army Major Kenneth Devoe, and retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dwayne Jackson, both members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  “To our veterans. Your service in uniform is an act of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. But just as important as your service while in uniform, your leadership in our neighborhoods, your mentorship to our youth, and your demonstration of strength in the face of new challenges is still needed,” emphasized Dr. Gregory Bostic, President of the Upsilon Lambda Chapter, in his opening remarks.  Retired Lieutenant Commander Dwayne Jackson stressed the importance of caring for veterans beyond the uniform.  “You can find veterans serving as teachers, mentoring our youth, and leading change within our neighborhoods,” said chapter member Brian Foster. The Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., chartered December 30, 1925, is Florida’s first Alpha chapter and celebrates 100 years of community service in 2025. The fraternity’s mission is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for the community. The chapter annually hosts scholarship programs to include the MLK Oratorical Contest and the Dr. Ezekiel “Zeke” W. Bryant High School Recognition, with active participation in voter registration initiatives, and partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America, the NAACP, and Urban League.
