By Yvonne Brockington – Alumni, former residents and supporters of the Simonds-Johnson Park community gathered June 27 for the communities ninth annual Prayer Breakfast, an event highlighting faith, fellowship and a shared commitment to preserving the neighborhoods legacy.
Hosted by the Simonds-Johnson Park Community Reunion Committee at the CRC Multipurpose Room, the breakfast brought together generations of residents for worship, reflection and community engagement. Kevin Dunbar served as master of ceremonies, while local musician Joe Watts provided musical selections.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Charles E. Cooper, a Simonds-Johnson Park alumnus, who challenged attendees to invest in future generations through faith, mentorship and leadership. Drawing from Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given, much is required,” Cooper encouraged participants to use their talents and experiences to strengthen their communities.
Guests were served a catered breakfast prepared by Jenika Norman and Tawanda Mosley.
Organizers also announced plans for oral history interviews scheduled for July 11, as part of an effort to preserve the stories and historical legacy of the Simonds-Johnson Park community for future generations.
Proceeds from the annual event will benefit the Moncrief Saints Association and help support the Simonds-Johnson Park Community Reunion Celebration, on Sept. 26, 2026, which will honor the legacy of Carlton “Soft Kid” Bryant.
The committee also encouraged residents and supporters to remain involved through its monthly meetings at the Simonds-Johnson Park Community Center as it continues its efforts to strengthen community ties and preserve neighborhood history.
