By William Thornton | wthornton@al.com – Charles Barkley says in a new public service announcement that Black Americans “have what we need in our community to save our lives” during the coronavirus pandemic.

The video spot has the Auburn and NBA great and television personality speaking for the SOS Council – a group of Black leaders in technology, business, health, culture and sports.

The short message is being released today on social media and other platforms. It calls on Black Americans to participate in the SOS Council’s study of how Black Americans are faring during the pandemic. More information can be found at the website.

According to the CDC, non-Hispanic Black Americans have a hospitalization rate for coronavirus five times higher than whites. Studies show Blacks have a higher prevalence of diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease, all of which are risk factors for COVID-19.

Study participants have an option to get matched with a Black doctor offering telemedicine services, and the study will be used to drive resources where they are needed most. Data analysis will be done at the Morehouse School of Medicine.
