St. Augustine Honors St. Johns County’s Hispanic Heritage by Hosting Sister Cities 100th Anniversary Celebration,1924-2024. The two cities are commemorating the 100th anniversary of their relationship with a variety of events in both countries.
WHEN/WHERE: September 5-9, 2024
- Thursday, September 5 @ 7 pm: Live Performance by Asturian folk band Tejedor at Lewis Auditorium, 14 Granada Street, St. Augustine, Florida.
- Friday, September 6
- 10 am: Welcome & Wreath-Laying Ceremony at City Hall, at the statue of Don Pedro Menendez de Avilés
- 5 – 9 pm: St. Augustine’s First Friday Art Walk at 20 Aviles Street
- Saturday, September 7
- 10 am: Founder’s Day Commemoration at Mission Nombre de Dios
- 8 pm: Live Performance by Asturian folk band Tejedor at Colonial Oak Music Park, 21 St. George Street.
- Sunday, September 8
- 10 am: Unveiling of a 100th-Anniversary Interpretive Marker and 12 – 9 pm: Aviles Street Festival, both located on Aviles Street
DETAILS:
o To celebrate the 100th Anniversary and in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Augustine welcomes Aviles, Spain.
o In 1924, representatives of St. Augustine traveled by ocean liner to Aviles as part of an official American delegation to visit the Kingdom of Spain following the signing of the Treaty of Paris and the end of the Spanish-American War.
o A delegation from St. Augustine visited Spain this month and an Aviles delegation will travel to Florida, September 5-9.
o As part of the cultural exchange of the 100th Anniversary, the Cultural Council sponsored local plein artist Martha Ferguson to travel to Avilés in early August to represent the City of Augustine. In return, Avilés artist Samuel Fernández Arma will be in St. Augustine to participate in this live plein air or outdoor event, and the public will have an opportunity to meet both artists.
o This celebration is presented by the City of St. Augustine and St. Johns Cultural Council, with support from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council,
