Jacksonville City Council’s Safer Together Initiative consists of a series of workshops

The Jacksonville City Council’s Safer Together Initiative consists of a series of workshops on a variety of topics including community policing, police policy, procedure, and budgeting. City Council President Tommy Hazouri appointed Councilmember Joyce Morgan, District 1 and Councilmember Michael Boylan, District 6 to oversee this effort. The aim of this program is to give the public a chance to interact with members of the Council, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, other community stakeholders, and subject matter experts to address these very important issues. These workshops will be fact finding in nature with the goal of fostering constructive dialogue about the challenges, successes, and opportunities available to us to make this a safer community for all our citizens. Our next meeting will be held on Zoom Monday, April 5, 2021 at 6:00 PM. Please find additional information and the attached Zoom link, and mark your calendars accordingly. We will conclude our discussion on Mental Health Training specifically discussing response to resistance training and the use of force training, policies and procedures.
We will utilize the remainder of the time with a discussion on the merits of a Citizen Review Board. We will be joined by Dr. Poppy Fitch from the San Diego Community Review Board and by Steve Zona, President of the Fraternal Order for JSO. Councilmember Garrett Dennis will also join us to discuss his current legislation to form a Citizen’s Review Board here in Jacksonville.
Friday – April 23, 2021 from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon
We will discuss a comparative analysis of the JSO budget to comparable communities and cities. We will also talk about budgetary allocations for personnel: Sworn officers, Corrections officers, Community Service Officers, and Civilians
We will conclude our workshops on Saturday May 1, 2021 from 9:30 am – 11:30 am
This agenda will focus on KHA’s Diversionary Program, Teen Court, Drug Court and the Cure Violence program.
