Nationwide — Michael Sherman, an African American husband from Montgomery County, Texas, and his wife Joacquia are expecting a baby girl, breaking a 108-year family streak of sons. Their daughter will be the first girl born into their family since 1917.
Michael, who serves as a lieutenant with the Montgomery Fire Department, said he feels honored to be the one breaking the cycle. “We are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over 100 years. It’s amazing,” he told ABC 7 New York.
The last girl in the family was Michael’s great-great-aunt, Orah Belle Sherman, born in 1917. She became known in Atlanta for her role during the civil rights movement, where she met leaders and left her mark as a trailblazer.
The baby is due in March, and the family is planning to check if their century-long boy streak qualifies for a Guinness World Record. For them, the arrival of a daughter is already history made.
